Why is it that so often, we know where we want to go but we just can’t seem to get around to going there? A million and one things distract us. We are pulled here and there not only by the many tasks that must be accomplished but also by the many opportunities that come our way.
We are enticed by many possibilities. Foolishly, we go down one rabbit trail after another. Unfortunately, what once looked like a great opportunity often seems to peter out in the end. Occasionally something even worse happens. We succeed so well in our new found “calling” that when we finally realize that we never actually wanted to do it in the first place we are too emotionally and financially dependent upon it to quit.
It is as if our inner compass is defective. We are adrift, pulled here and there by the strong desires of others, by advertising, by our need to feel important and safe. We barter our true meaning and purpose for security and the acceptance of others.
Deep down we know that something is wrong but we just can’t seem to put our finger on what it is. A discomfort and disquiet pervade our times of reflection. We avoid being still because we do not want to face the truth, that we are off course, that our lives are not what we had hoped they would be.
At the root of this misdirection is fear. We are afraid that if we attempted to pursue our dreams that we would fail. This failure would finally prove what we have suspected all along, that we are worthless, that we will never succeed.
We are victims of one of the darkest lies of all time. The lie that our personal worth and value is determined by how successful we are.
None of us wants to be worthless so we choose goals that are far below our actual ability or goals that do not really mean that much to us. This way we will be safe.
If you truly want to achieve your highest purpose, you will have to learn how to accept not feeling safe. One day a strange thing will happen, you will realize that the uneasiness you feel is actually a good thing. Being afraid is often an indicator that you are moving in the right direction.
You will begin to break free and to right your compass. You will recapture the dreams of your youth. In them, you will find the threads of truth that will lead you to a new and greater vision of your future.
