Pros and Cons of Pre-cut Wooden Sheds
If you are looking at building a wooden shed in your backyard, there are quite a bit of considerations to be aware of. You may be asking yourself if you should build from scratch or if purchasing a pre-cut shed kit is the way to go. Putting costs aside, here are some of the pros and cons of these kits.
Pros
A big advantage of pre-cut kits is the build time. These kits can be put together in a fraction of the time it would take to build from scratch since they come with all the materials and step-by-step instructions. There’s no need to be able to read a blueprint. And because all the pieces are precisely cut, you don’t need to measure each board (which is another time saver). If you feel that you don’t have the necessary skills to build from scratch, then this is a great option. In most cases, all you need are a few basic tools. Having all the pieces pre-cut helps in making everything straight and square. Manufacturers take great care in engineering their sheds to make sure everything fits correctly. An added benefit, by the way, is safety due to the fact that there are less cutting and less steps involved.
Cons
Pre-cut kits aren’t for everyone. For instance, woodworkers or handymen who desire doing all their own cutting would probably rather build from scratch. Although there are a lot of designs to choose from, you may not find exactly what you had in mind. Whereas building from scratch allows for unlimited possibilities. In this case, you may be looking for or found shed plans you intend to use. Make sure to get plans that come with a materials list to help save you the headache when it comes to purchasing all the parts.
As you can see, there are a lot of advantages to building from a kit as opposed to building custom. In the end, your choice to purchase a pre-cut shed kit or build one from scratch depends on your comfort level working with tools. But, even with minimal experience, a kit can be a great way to start learning.
