How to rig live fish for blues, having problems with blues taking my bait?
Hey everyone. I use live killies and mullet as bait for blues. The problem I am having is….
When I hook the mullet by the mouth, the blues bite the tail off. If I hook it on the tail, then they will take the head off. When I hook it in the middle, they simply take the fish. When I use 2 hooks, they bite inbetween them. I use self-made steelon coated wire, and medium saltwater hooks. I always get a ton of hits, but they always take or destroy my bait. I do go home with a couple of fish, but if I had a catch on every hit, then I would easily fill my daily limit. Does anyone have a method to hook a live fish for blues so the fish still stay alive and restrict it’s movement as little as possible?
Small Blues are notorious for this.I always fish for flounder using finger mullet Hooked through the lip and when the blues are out I’m reeling in a mullet head. Also have tried moving the hook to the tail and they would take the head.Wouldn’t think they are that smart.
That being said the best thing to do when small blues are out is to use a treble hook and hook it near the anal fin.Right behind their butt hole.Pretty good setup that usually gets em.Only bad thing is your line may get twisted some doing this but you should get em.

what is a good fish for a medium level hobbieist?
ok i have a tank that was a saltwater tank befor all my fish died. i have washed all my gravel(very well), as well as bleached them(i need to know if thats good or not). i want some beautiful, nice community fish. i have a 12 gallon tank, any fish under approx. 10, that i can get at petco! thanks so much, all help is loveddd!!
The only good fish at PeCo that could fit in that tank are relitivily easy to care for. If you are willing to spend the money you could get a pair of German rams they are really beautiful. Though, they are very sensitive to water chemistry, and have to have a very well varieted diet. And very frequent water changes. And the tank must be fully cycled, they do cost alot though they are worth it.
