Ice fishing is one of the most popular forms of fishing in society today. what weight fishing line should I use?
I’m going pier fishing in southern California. I haven’t fished since I was about 12. When looking in our garage i found all the fishing line we have is 30 lb. I think that is too much. what is a good line for catching mackerel or crappies and other fish of that sort?
There aren’t any bluefish or stripers in southern Cal — just like there are no crappies in the ocean. In general the biggest fish you’re likely to get is a bonito of a couple of pounds, and most of your catch will be under a pound.
Anywhere from 10 to 20 pound line will be sufficient, and if you’re just fishing for mackerel and perch, the lighter line will do. (If you do get a bigger fish, regulars fishing on the pier will generally have a net or pier gaff to help you bring it up.)
Any line which has been sitting in your garage for years has likely decayed enough that you should replace it anyway. Clean off the rod and reel and make sure it all works before heading down to the pier. Old grease in a reel can gum it up after a few years of sitting.
